This course introduces students to the principles and functions of effective interpersonal communications across various context with an emphasis on social work. The first half of the course will introduce the study and science of communications including: verbal and nonverbal channels, person perception, self-concept, language, emotions, culture and diversity, listening skills, and communication barriers. The second half of the course will expand on interpersonal skills needed in social work. Topics include group relationships and management, non-violent communication and conflict management, cross cultural work, and working with families and children. Presentation skills in groups and in public will wrap up the course.
