Criminal Law-I introduces students to basic concepts of crime, first, by considering the role of criminal law, engaging with the notion of culpability, and introducing the basics of criminal procedure. Then, the focus shifts upon elements of crime in which both the conduct (actus reus) and the mental (mens rea) elements are extensively taught. After teaching strict liability offences, the course then moves on specific crimes. These include homicide offences such as murder and manslaughter, and non-fatal non-sexual offences against the person. The course then concludes its focus on offences against persons by considering sexual offences including rape, sexual assault, and causing sexual activity without consent.
