The purpose of this course is to give students the basic historical, institutional and political knowledge necessary to understand major issues of European integration in the past, present and future. The first part of the course covers all the major integration initiatives from the ECSC, to the Treaty of Lisbon. The second part of the course presents the main institutional actors within the European Union and the decision making mechanisms within them. The final part of the course will deal with questions on the future of the European Union. By the end of this course, students will have a strong understanding of the major turning points of European Integration since the post-war period; competences and functioning of EU institution and major policy areas.
