This course focuses on the human instinct of language acquisition.  Particularly, it examines how, why, and under what conditions human beings acquire language, both their first and - more to the point of this course - their second. It presents the main theories of language acquisition, considering their bearing on language teaching. It discusses also the effects of factors such as intelligence, personality, and age. By the end of the semester, students will be able to discuss second language acquisition theories and research studies at some length in spoken and written texts.
