This course is aimed to provide basic knowledge about interpersonal communication. Knowing the philosophy that “one cannot not communicate”, course will cover main fundamental concepts that are basic to all forms of interpersonal communication and relationships at an introductory level. Course is designed to address necessity of knowledge and skills needed to improve communication competence in encounters with others. It is inevitable to ignore culture in communication, thus learning about cultural differences, how cultures differ and considering the nature and principles of intercultural communication becomes important especially for teamwork and collaboration at work. Building and maintaining relationships with others requires awareness of individual needs, characteristics and personality types and in turn modification in communication practices. Additionally, importance of listening, the process of listening, gender differences in listening, major principles of verbal non-verbal messages in relation to culture, making of language more logical and effective is discussed. Concept of emotion and the major obstacles to communicating emotions and responding to emotions explained.
