The course provides a chronological survey of the works of (western) art from the Renaissance to the second half of the 20th century, including the Baroque, Neoclassicism, Historicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Postimpressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism, New Objectivity, Purism, Neo-Plasticism, Suprematism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Post-Modernism. Individual art historical styles, types of works of art, subject matters, iconography, semiotics and techniques are analysed, considering the respective cultural, historical, political  and social context. The changing notions of the question “what is art, and what is an artist?” serve as background throughout the course.
