This course offers a survey of key developments in cinema culture over the past ten years. Rather than attempting to examine world cinema in its entirety, the focus will be limited to their production in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The films under consideration might be regarded as outstanding or groundbreaking examples of film art, but they also need to be understood as products of specific cultures. These films will therefore be studied in their cultural and historical contexts. Although this course progresses on a largely country-by-country basis, it will also emphasize the globalized nature of contemporary cinema and the transnational arrangements that underpin many films produced around the world.
