This course focuses on women and children in the family context. Thus it builds upon the students knowledge of basic family law. There will be an extensive focus on domestic violence and how it is handled both through family and criminal law as well as what it means for family proceedings if there is also a complaint on domestic violence. The second main topic of this course is provisions concerning children and child protection. This will begin with establishment of parenthood and discuss extensively the rights and responsibilities of a legal parent. The final bit of the course will work on how the law can protect children from abuse and other types of harms they may find themselves in in a family context.
