This course provides an introduction for computer networks performance evaluation. The course mainly has 4 chapters. In the first chapter, review of computer network concepts and terminology – layered services, will be discussed. In the second chapter, Internet routing protocols with an introduction to IP routing will be studied. After that, network performance analysis will be discussed with introductory concepts behind Poisson statistics and Markov chains. Simple traffic sources and their properties will be studied. Traffic problems using Markov model, blocking, delay and packet loss will be analysed. Analytical modelling of local area network protocols and queuing networks will be introduced. As a final chapter, network simulation will be discussed with pseudo-random number generation. Generating statistical distributions.Programming time-based and event-based simulations. Start-up conditions. Statistical analysis of simulation results.
