Molecular microbiology and microbial
pathogenesis course involves oral presentation and discussion of current
research articles on pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites,
and fungi). The cellular and molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions at
the structure function level will be discussed. Particular attention will be
paid on approaches for pathogenesis, antimicrobials and anti-virulence factors
for various microbial infections. Emphasis will be placed on understanding
experimental techniques and design of future experiments in the areas covered.
Students are expected to prepare articles, to participate actively in
discussion, and to design specific aims for one related research project.
Critical thinking skills are a special point of attention in this course where
students are encouraged to think critically about experimental approaches as
well as controls.
