In this course, Pharmacy Faculty students will learn types of matter, measurements, properties of substanes; atoms and atomic theory, components of the atom, introduction to the periodic table, molecules and ions, formulas of ionic compounds, names of ionic compounds; atomic masses, the mole, mass relations in chemical formulas, mass relations in reactions; measurements on gases, the ideal gas law, gas law calculations, stoichiometry of gaseous reactions, gas mixtures: Partial pressures and atomic spectra, the hydrogen atom, quantum numbers, atomic orbitals; shape and sizes; electron configurations in atoms, orbital diagrams of atoms; polarity of molecules; principles of heat flow, measurements of heat flow, calorimetry, enthalpy, thermo-chemical equations, enthalpies of formation, the first law of thermodynamics, liquids and solids.
