This course looks at diverse visions of the modern house in the context of technological and aesthetic concerns of today’s architects. The content includes examination of various housing typologies by means of analyzing housing projects of different architects; the discussion and interpretation of the house form regarding the unique formal properties, façade compositions, interior spaces, design shapes, textures and building materials chosen. Examples are given from Corbusier, Wright, Mies, New York Five, Botta, Ando, Gehry, UN Studio, Herzog de Meuron, Coop Himmelb(L)Au, Shigaru Bane and so forth. At the end of the course, the student should be familiar with the design approaches of the contemporary architects who have been able to synthesize the architectural inheritance in housing.
