The aim of this course is to familiarize students with different types of English spoken in the world and with cultural characteristics reflected in different varieties of English. The emphasis is placed on phonological, lexical, grammatical, semantic and pragmatic differences in the use of English in different societies. This course covers the following topics: The use of English as an international language, the different uses of English and English as a common language; how the use of English as an international language is reflected on English education and teacher education; the development of consciousness of the students towards the relationship between language and culture, and the examination of the place of culturally language teaching; examining textbooks, literary works, films, TV programs and advertisements and the evaluation of cultural objects
This course concentrates on the basic features of Pragmatics as one of
the fields of Linguistics and the relation between Pragmatics and Language Teaching.
It deals with how language is used as a means of communication. The
course is based on the topics of Maxims of Conversation: Quality, Quantity, Relation
and Manner as well as the Speech Acts: Locutionary Act, Illocutionary Act, Perlocutionary
Act and Maxims of Politeness. This course also deals with the application
pragmatic knowledge, teaches how to make use of these in ELT classroom and
focuses on the preparation of materials for the teaching of utterances in
appropriate contexts.
