This course explores the architecture and cities in the Mediterranean region. It is essential to understand how Mediterranean architecture is shaped not only by a specific geographical boundary, but also by considering climatic, socio-cultural, physical, and environmental factors. This course aims to improve students' knowledge levels and critical thinking skills in design by conducting research and analyzing Mediterranean architectural precedents and urban morphologies. For this purpose, creative design approaches unique to the Mediterranean, both functionally and aesthetically, are discussed in an interactive environment, within the context of urban settlement, topography, context, spatial volume and mass form of buildings, surface characteristics, and use of local materials as well as traditional and modern construction techniques.

Space is not just a physical phenomenon people can use. There are many aspects of human life which has direct or indirect effects on shaping and functioning in one space. Culture is one of the most important aspects of a society that has a direct effect on people’s lives.
Therefore, this course is about introduction to the range of research into man-made environment relationships which have implications for design disciplines; an attempt to understand the relationships of the physical environment and cultural factors. It discusses theories, models, approaches, and important concepts in manmade environment relationships; culture, and space including basic concepts such as privacy, personal space, territoriality, identity; home environment, and culture.

Building elements are required to perform their primary function within the required lifespan. However, building elements are exposed and affected by the environmental conditions. Weather resistance, thermal behavior, fire resistance, acoustic behavior and structural performances are characteristics which will be analyzed. Climatic conditions such as solar cycle, solar radiation and energy, environmental degradation such as air, water, soil pollution, and the element and material characteristics such as insulation, heat transmittance, and degradation are considered parameters. Service Life Prediction (SLP) examines desired performances with the acceptable maintenance cost. The aim of the course is to examine the building elements and environmental impacts by systematic approaches of Service Life Prediction, Life Cycle Assessment and Building Performance Evaluation in terms of sustainable building.
It is an elective course in doctorate program in architecture. It deals with the Traditional Turkish House which is the main concept of vernacular Turkish architecture. While explaining the common principles of the Turkish House, the main aim is to give an understanding of the relations between the building and lifestyle.
Through a series of lectures and discussions, students will continue to develop an understanding of the complexities of perceiving the lifestyle during the Ottoman period and the different types of building materials and techniques in Anatolia. Moreover, site visits to the old city centers in Cyprus will be organized to observe the preserved examples.
